Synopsis for "Sabotage at the Steel Mills"
At the Sterling Steel Mill in Capitol City, a mysterious man cries out, "For the cause!" and pushes one of the employees off of a catwalk into a vat of molten steel. News of the event reaches Apex Broadcasting, and Irene Miller is assigned to investigate the case. Alan Scott doesn't want her handling the steel mill case alone, so he fakes illness in order to leave work early. He changes into Green Lantern and follows her to Sterling Steel.
Green Lantern and Irene interview Mister Sterling who tells them that his plant has been the target of several sabotage attempts. He fears that agents of a foreign power are seeking to destroy materials for a new government-contracted battle tank that they are outfitting.
Irene walks about the mill, when suddenly an assassin tries to murder her with a hastily-flung wrench. Green Lantern dives down and scoops Irene up and out of the way before the weapon can hit her. He then grapples with the assassin, but during the struggle, the murderer falls upon a staircase, breaking his neck.
Later, a masked figure conspires with his henchmen on the next stage of their plan. They want to get Green Lantern out of the way, and decide to go after him through Irene. They kidnap Irene and leave Green Lantern a message on where to find her.
Green Lantern arrives at the noted location and walks into a trap. A thug knocks him out from behind and encases him inside of a solid steel case. They dump the case into the river, and leave him for dead. Alan eventually revives and uses his ring to break free.
He tracks down the mysterious saboteur, but the villain traps him inside of a warehouse. Alan tries to break free, but his Power Ring runs out of energy. Instead, he drives one of Sterling's prototype tanks through the steel walls and breaks free. He catches up with the saboteur and the two fight atop a catwalk inside the mill. The saboteur tries to strangle GL, but Alan manages to flip him over the ledge, sending him into a vat of molten steel.
Later, Green Lantern and Irene Miller discover that the saboteur was in fact a man named Harkiss, a company stockholder who sought to lower Sterling Steel's value, so that he could buy shares of stock at a cheap price.

Synopsis for "How He Began"
Doctor Charles McNider is one of the most renowned surgeons in the New York area. Working alongside him, is his trusted nurse and companion, Myra Mason. One evening, a harried police officer calls upon McNider's services. He tells him that an important witness against criminal gangster "Killer" Maroni has just been shot and may die. McNider races to the hospital to save his life.
During the operation, one of Maroni's thugs, Mike, climbs the fire escape outside the building and lobs a hand grenade into the room. The explosion kills everyone except for Dr. McNider, however he is rendered permanently blind from the attack.
A few nights later, McNider is resting in his study when a wood owl crashes through the window onto the floor. Shocked by the disturbance, Charles rips the bandages from his eyes and discovers that he can see perfectly well in the dark. However, he is still completely blind when in the presence of natural light. He mends the injured bird and names him Hooty.
McNider decides to use his unique night vision powers to become the latest in a growing line of mystery men. Naming himself Doctor Mid-Nite, he takes to the streets with a pair of special infrared goggles, and an arsenal of custom made Blackout Bombs.
Doctor Mid-Nite learns that Killer Maroni has attempted to take another life. He tracks the gangster down to his townhouse and uses his Blackout Bombs temporarily blind Maroni's men in a flash of black smoke. While the thugs' perceptions are obscured, Doctor Mid-Nite easily takes them down. After doing away with the hired help, he apprehends Killer Maroni and brings the gangster to justice.
