Dan Garrett found the scarab when as he was in an ancient Egyptian pyramid. He soon found out that the scarab could give him powers and he decided to use the scarab and the powers it gave him for good. He became the costumed crime fighter the Blue Beetle. When Dan died, his student and friend Ted Kord took the scarab and carried on Dan's legacy by becoming the new Blue Beetle. Though the scarab did not give Ted powers like it did his mentor, that did not stop him from continuing his role as the Blue Beetle. When Ted found out that Maxwell Lord was scheming against the Justice League, Maxwell fatally shot him in the head. When this happened the wizard Shazam took the scarab and brought it to the Rock of Eternity. When the wizard died and the Rock of Eternity was destroyed, the scarab was launched back towards earth and it landed in a lot in the city of El Paso, Texas. It was here that the third and most recent blue beetle Jaime Reyes found the scarab. The scarab latched on to Jaime's spine and turned his skin into armor, giving him new abilities and powers. It was later discovered that the scarab was made by an alien race called the Reach. The Reach sent similar scarabs to many planets in search of fresh hosts - hosts that would use their powers to fight all lifeforms for the sake of conquering the planet. However, the scarab that landed on Earth is a defective one that does not feel the need to kill, but to help others and give their host more free will. The Reach was once an enemy of the Green Lanter Corps, which explains why the scarab acts strangely around Green Lanterns and their power rings.
